Bedbugs becoming a growing problem

Bedbugs grow to the size of an apple seed, and show up anywhere from your house to five star hotels.

That's because they are extremely mobile.

"All it takes for a hijacking bug or bugs is to be transported in a suitcase, or on clothing or shoes from one place to the others," FOX 13's Dr. Joette Gioivinco said.

And the problem is getting bigger. McCall Services, an extermination company, says they got twice as many bedbugs calls this year as they did last year.

The bedbug population is getting larger up north, so it is increasing here as well. Pesticides such as DDT, that used to be the "go to" solution, have now been banned, and bedbugs may be developing a tolerance to newer ones.

Over the counter solutions, according to experts, don't work very well. So many people end up calling in the pros, which can be costly. According to McCall Service, the average home bill starts at about $1,500. It is not covered by insurance.
